SAN FRANCISCO FOUNDATION FUNDS COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP EFFORT

San Francisco Foundation funds Community
Leadership effort within HIV Research Section

With support from the San Francisco Foundation, the HIV Research Section of the San Francisco Department of Health is delighted to be conducting an innovative new project whose goal is to use community based insight to inform and implement HIV prevention strategies directed at Black gay and bisexual men who live in the Tenderloin and the Bayview sections of San Francisco.

The goal of the first phase of this program is to interview a group of community members and community stakeholders about their beliefs regarding current HIV prevention work happening in our communities, with particular attention to examining barriers, facilitators and strategies for HIV prevention. We will share what we learned broadly through two community forums, to be held in August, 2009.

The second phase of the program is to identify two teams of neighborhood advocates who live in the Bayview and Tenderloin. These neighborhood advocates will work collaboratively for eight months to develop and implement HIV prevention strategies in their neighborhoods. The two teams will come together at least twice during this process to share ideas and to strategies.

Finally, in Spring, 2010, we will host two more community forums to share lessons learned and to discuss next steps.

This long term community engagement project will be led by community members most impacted and concerned about HIV in the Black community.
